Entertainment Trivia

To take your mind off the football I present some useless entertainment trivia.

After last night’s disappointment on the football field, regular readers will be pleased to hear that ITV is bringing back Popstars to make our lives better. This time, according to Digital Spy, the show will aim to create the UK’s next male-female musical duet. To make it even more depressing, the same source also reports that ITV are planning an ITV3 show – presumably so we can have Popstars on ITV1; Popstars Xtra on ITV2, and an additional behind-the-scenes-of-the-behind-the-scenes show on ITV3.

While I was reading the excellent Digital Spy, I had cause to update the Man of the Moment entry for Colin and Matt.

What’s Happening on Channel Four?

Next Friday night is Channel Four’s big Friday.

In 2002, Kate won Big Brother 3. I started the summer with little interest and then, gradually, watched more and more of it. Last year, I seemed very aware of Big Brother 4 from the beginning. Then I grew to support Fed despite the bad press, and gradually, you get sucked in.

next week is a big night for channel 4

So, this time next week – in a clever bit of scheduling – we will see the last episode of Friends and then watch as the new contestants enter the new house for Big Brother 5. Perhaps I will try to avoid it again this year. Still, it means interest in Dermot O’Leary will pick up again, and that tends to go hand in hand with the beginning of summer. It’s a good time of year!

Channel Four will have a big night next week, but C4’s boss Mark Thompson won’t be celebrating with them as he’s just jumped ship back to the BBC.

Million Pound Pair Move

Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan are off to

Million Pound Property Book Cover

While on the subject of trivial entertainment pieces [by which I mean this rant about radio], maybe it’s time for a gay ‘Richard and Judy’ equivalent.

Scots interior designers Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan have been signed on an exclusive two-year contract, and are being lined up to present a range of property, entertainment and lifestyle shows on Five [Source].

Honestly, I can’t wait (and I didn’t even watch a great deal of The Million Pound Property Experiment, and I am not in the house for daytime lifestyle shows).

Complaining About TV?

Ofcom’s complaints bulletin has been issued, so I thought I’d have a look.

Ofcom’s upheld complaints about the Phixx performance on BBC’s Top of the Pops (scenes from a bondage club) which amuses me. If you look at some of the pictures of Man of the Moment Andrew Kinlochan you’ll see they are from the video. It’s a lot of pretty boys tied up on chairs singing. Apparently, it breached some standard (apart from musical taste). If bondage clubs were populated by pretty guys tied to chairs singing pop tunes you can bet I would be first in line!

They’ve also upheld complaints about the Channel Four series Little Friends. The concept of the series, using children to entice people into comedy stunts, was amusing at first, but gradually the whole thing became cringeworthy. Apparently, it breached the code on ‘General Offence’. It really should have breached the code for a faintly amusing idea taken too far. I am sure we’re all relieved to know that ‘Ofcom accepted that the broadcaster had taken steps to protect the children’s moral welfare’.

While you’re looking into offensive things you should read the very short entry on Dream 107.7’s breach of Section 1.3 (Language in Programming) of the standards. That only one person complained about the language (when you would have expected Ofcom’s switchboard to be melting) suggests a very limited audience at the time.

Broadcasting regulation is, apparently, here for my own welfare. Shame they can’t regulate Footballer’s Wives off the air (a new series starts tonight).
